Red Crossbills are back at Winter Park!

A small flock was seen near the parking lot and then again around Sleigh Ride. These incredible birds will travel great distances in search of the best evergreen cone crops, which is their dominant food source. They also have an amazing adaptation to crack into these cones – an overlapping bill! Head out to “piney” trails at Winter Park and listen for a series of short hard “jips” overhead, which to me sound like baby chickens peeping!
