 Welcome to Nordic Kids 2009

Dear Nordic Kids Skiers and Parents

We are hoping for a wonderful skiing season with lots of snow.

If you are new to Nordic Kids – Welcome!  Our goal is to provide an opportunity for children ages 5-13 and their families to have fun on skis while learning more about cross country skiing.  We will meet at Minocqua Winter Park from 2-4 p.m. on five to six Sunday afternoons during January, February, and March.  We plan to meet regardless of the temperature.

Give some thought to where your child fits into the ability levels described below.  We use your rating and the child’s age to identify an appropriate small group for your child to ski with.  After a brief large group session each week, we will break into our small groups to work on new skills, take a ski tour, and play ski games or whatever the leader might have planned.  We will also have special activities such as a treasure hunt, and end of the season picnic bonfire.

Level I
Your child needs to learn basic skills of balance, control, and getting up after a fall – your child new to the sport.  Poles are discouraged at this level.

Level II
Your child will be introduced to uphill and downhill techniques and diagonal striding with and without poles.

Level III
Your child will develop good edge control with uphill and downhill techniques, improve diagonal striding, and will work on more advanced downhill techniques.

Level IV (IF we have enough to fill this level)

Your child will continue to build on the previous skills and skating may be introduced to those children that are interested. Please remember that Nordic Kids is not a ski school. The leaders are parents with an interest in children and skiing.  Most children would benefit from additional professional lessons through the Winter Park Ski School which has an excellent team of PSIA certified instructors.  Children in 3rd grade through high school can also join the Lakeland Nordic Ski Team which is coached by professional ski instructors.

We realize that all parents aren’t great skiers and would like to have fun on the snow too.  If there is sufficient interest we can arrange group lessons through the ski school to help you improve your skills and prepare you to work with the kids on their skills.

EQUIPMENT:
Skis, boots, poles and appropriate clothing are your responsibility.  Please have the equipment appropriately sized for your child.  We do not want the children defeated by poorly sized or inappropriate equipment.  An equipment trade-up program is available through the Winter Park Ski Shop.  See Dan Clausen in the ski shop for advice if you are in doubt about your equipment or clothing.  Daily rentals are also available.  The Ski Shop phone number is 356-1099.

PARENTAL PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED:
A commitment from each parent as a group leader, assistant leader, or adult volunteer is necessary to make Nordic Kids successful.  Please select the area where you would be able to participate on the registration form.

Children five and six years of age must have an adult ski with them until the group leader feels this is no longer necessary.  Any children younger than five are welcome to observe/participate in the activities of the entry level group but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

COSTS:
The cost for participating in Nordic Kids is  $35 per child.   $35 covers Nordic Kids expenses, limited use trail pass, and the entry fee for the “Beat the Bunny” race at the end of the season.

A trail fee is required at all times when skiing at Minocqua Winter Park.  The limited use trail pass is available only when you are skiing with Nordic Kids on the designated Sundays from 2-4 p.m.  A Daily or seasons pass needs to be purchased for all other times.

Each child is required to have their own health insurance coverage as skiing involves some risk.

RETURN YOUR REGISTRATION FORM NO LATER THAT JANUARY 1ST IF POSSIBLE.  If you have any questions or would like assistance in getting started with skiing, please call Meagan & Rod Rudisill at 356-2635.

See you skiing!
